Far up in the lonely hills there runs a tumbling stream. Born of the perpetual snow patches in the high, misty corries she hurries onwards towards the distant sea, gathering streamlets and springs, ever widening, never resting. For much of her journey the stream stands apart from the world and its inhabitants, seldom visited, seldom disturbed keeping safe her secrets within the sombre solitude of the glens and grandeur of the hills.
At the unearthly hour of 06:00 I set off and picked up George at his house. The drive North was a long five hours but the company was good and the miles soon rolled by, although my traveling companion wasn't too pleased when we didn't stop in The Garrison for a MacDonald's breakfast.
We slept in the heather beneath an ink-black, star-bright sky. A velvet cloud of pipistrelle bats whisked out into the darkness from nearby ruined croft buildings. A fox barked sharply in the distance. A solemn owl ghosted by on silent wings. Late curlew called hauntingly. Loch water lapped the shores of my dreams and sleep came easy in that warm night.
As a self-confessed fishing junkie I am always on the look out for my next hit, through the years I have tried and become obsessed with most forms of fishing, lately my drug of choice has been saltwater fly-fishing.
