Twenty five years ago, I fished a loch on the Rhuba Mor peninsula in Wester Ross. I caught one trout. Not a remarkable achievement, you might think, and no doubt you would be right. That trout, though, weighed about twelve ounces, well above the average for a highland loch, and it left a lasting impression.

My fishing diary of November 1998 records:
"I have an idea for the design of a lightweight sea trout fly for late night fishing, especially in early season on the Earn, say late May or early June, when a larger fly may be required. Tube flies and standard Waddington lures always seemed to be rather bulky or heavy and the hook attachment not ideal....¨
I met Michael Grieve first as a small boy when he canvassed round the tenement doors of Govan in the mid sixties trying to get my parents to vote Communist. “Whit’s a Communist dad” I enquired? “A man who disnae believe in God son” he answered. And that was that, you didn’t argue much with Dad. But I still remember Michael’s face. Those tired eyes and moustache just like his father.
I knew it was going to be one of those trips as soon as I got into my daughter’s car and turned on the satnav. It didn’t matter how often I told the young lady that I wasn’t going that way she still insisted I do a ‘U’ turn or turn right instead of left. I stayed polite and eventually she decided I was right and kept quiet.
If you should ever find yourself heading for Ethiopia (unlikely for most I know but hey, it happened to me) then one thing you really need to pack is your trout rod. No, don’t adjust your specs. Suspend disbelief for a moment and read on. Ethiopia is a huge country mostly known for its arid and parched low-lying Eastern regions but it’s really is an incredibly varied place from massive lakes and swampland, deserts and virgin forest to high mountains.
